The armed conflict, which intensified in late July 2025, involved heavy artillery and 

airstrikes, causing a major displacement of civilians. A timeline of the border tensions is

 detailed below.

A Cambodian soldier was killed during a brief exchange of fire in the Emerald Triangle, Preah Vihear Border, an area inside Cambodia's territory.
June ​​15​​

Cambodia formally submits an appl​ication to the International Court of Justice (ICJ), seeking a legal solution to Thailand's border violations.
June 22​​-June 31​​

Cambodia halts imports from Thailand in response to Thailand's threat to block fuel, internet, and electricity and unilaterally close borders to Cambodia.
July​​ 1​​6

Thai soldiers step on a war-era landmine in a disputed area and accuse Cambodia of laying new mines.
July 2​​4-Now​​

The Thai Second Army Region blocks access to the Ta Moan Thom temple. As tension mounted, Thai soldiers opened fire, leading to the current conflict.

Early June​​

Cambodia attempted peaceful negotiations but was met with refusal and non-cooperation from Thailand.
June 19

A leaked phone call conversation from Thailand's prime minister to Cambodia's leader, Hun Sen, sparked an outrage; Thailand's politics destabilized.
July 1

Thailand's Prime Minister got suspended from her role, clearly showing Thailand's internal instability.
July 23​​

Second landmine explosion. The Thais expel the Cambodian ambassador and recall their own.

Diplomatic Tensions

The recent border conflict has significantly impaired diplomatic relations between Cambodia and Thailand, resulting in mistrust and hostility. Although both nations have reached a ceasefire agreement, the fundamental issues and political tension still persist, leaving the peace fragile.
